Does glucosamine help relieve muscle and joint pain?

Glucosamine supplements have recently gained popularity as a safe alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS – such as aspirin and ibuprofen) to relieve pain, inflammation, as well as maintain joint health, giving them endurance and flexibility. In a 2006 study, 79 percent of men who took 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine and 1,200 mg of chondroitin a day experienced a significant reduction in chronic knee pain. Research data suggest that glycosamine-chondroitin supplements start to act after a longer period of time than NSAIDS, but have fewer side effects and a longer-lasting effect.

Previously obtained scientific evidence confirms that glucosamine can alleviate the symptoms of osteoarthritis, but especially in combination with chondroitin.

Recommended dose: glucosamine is available as tablets, capsules and powders. Manufacturers recommend using 1,500 mg per day in three separate doses.

Associated risks/criticisms: glucosamine supplements are obtained from crustaceans and are therefore not recommended for use in people who are allergic to the consumption of these marine inhabitants. There are also some concerns regarding the regulation of glucosamines and blood sugar levels. To be sure, diabetics should be advised to monitor their blood sugar levels.
